On August 26, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine, which the Ukrainian president called one of the largest since the beginning of the large-scale invasion. The country was attacked by more than a hundred missiles of various types and about a hundred shaheds. In particular, the Kyiv hydroelectric power station in Vyshhorod and other energy infrastructure facilities in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Odessa, Poltava, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and Chernihiv regions were hit.

We have already told you where you can check the power outage schedules in different regions of Ukraine.

The strict restrictions on electricity consumption may last for 1-2 weeks until the damaged distribution systems are repaired, according to the President of the All-Ukrainian Energy Assembly Ivan Plachkov. According to him, the attack was aimed at a complete power outage, but power engineers were able to react quickly and prevent this scenario.

Official sources confirm that this was the largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, but do not yet give any specific forecasts on how the damage will be repaired. Deputy Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said during the national telethon that damage assessment is still underway and power engineers are carrying out emergency repairs where possible. At the same time, she stressed that the situation is difficult but still under control.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal added that Russia had used cluster missiles to attack Ukrainian substations for the first time, causing severe damage to power facilities. Although planned blackouts were to be avoided this week, the impact of the missile attacks required emergency power outages to maintain the stability of the power grid.

Power outages and emergency power supply

Ukrenergo also confirmed the large-scale attack and reported a power outage due to damage to key facilities. In this context, the company is carrying out emergency repairs and is also forced to carry out emergency power shutdowns. YASNO CEO Serhiy Kovalenko also warned that the situation remains difficult and further attacks could lead to even larger outages.

Restoring distribution systems may take several weeks, entailing severe restrictions on electricity supply and possible emergency outages in addition to emergency shutdown plans. Nevertheless, the energy sector is working to minimize these consequences and restore stability to the country’s electricity system.

We remind you! Power outages cause a lot of inconvenience for Ukrainians, especially for those who work in a remote location and need to be constantly online. Read how to find places with generators in your city using special maps to charge your phone or work.
