Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays trades ball for Leafs cap

Two things Toronto Blue Jays fans never want to see in the same sentence are “trade” and “Vladimir Guerrero Jr.”

This is especially true if it is a post on the team’s social media accounts that begins with “OFFICIAL” in capital letters.

But Vladdy was the one making the deals in Boston.

The red-hot slugger made his own deal by trading a signed baseball with a fan for a Toronto Maple Leafs cap.

The slugfest at Fenway Park took place during Monday night’s game, which the Blue Jays won 7-3 to complete a two-game winning streak in Beantown, and the visitors triumphed earlier in the afternoon to end a suspended game from earlier this season.

Guerrero posed with his new hat on social media and joked that he wants his own hockey jersey, similar to the ones the team made last month as a fan gift for George Springer.

“I need my own hockey jersey, like my friend George Springer,” said Guerrero Jr.

The two teammates may share a love of fast-paced play on the ice: Springer is a lifelong hockey fan who grew up near the Hartford Civic Center and attended Whalers games with his father, while Guerrero Jr. was born in Montreal when his father played for the Expos.

Fans on social media loved the jokey swap, and many were quick to joke that the Leafs’ bad luck had rubbed off on the star as well.

“It’s too late. He touched it. The curse has spread. So much for the winning streak,” commented one Instagram user.

“No wonder you keep choking,” wrote another.

“Don’t wear it! It brings bad luck!” pleaded a third user.

Others were not so enthusiastic about the “official” announcement and hoped the team had negotiated a long-term contract with Guerrero, who will become a free agent after the 2025 season.

“How about we make his next contract official? I know I’d be up for that lol,” one user replied.

“Unless it’s official: 12 years, 300 million. I don’t want to see anything official next to his name,” wrote another.
