Voter registration: 580,000 new voters register ahead of major voter roll revision | Pune News

580,000 new voters register before summary revision of the electoral roll

Pune: The District Election Office has received 5.79 lakh applications for new Voter registration before the final publication of the summary revision Voter Register on August 31st.
The intensive campaign was carried out to reach a maximum number of voters before the Parliamentary elections probably in October-November. The district had registered 8.4 million voters in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and the new voters would be included in the electoral roll, deputy electoral commissioner Minal Kalaskar told TOI. The special voter registration drive ended on August 20. 9.29 million applications – for new voter registration, deletion and address change – were received.
The final draft will be published on August 31.
Many voters had complained that their names were missing from the voters’ list and they were unable to find their polling stations during the Lok Sabha elections. These voters were asked to re-register and verify their names before the general elections.
“We addressed the complaints of voters whose names were not found in the Lok Sabha elections by asking them to re-register so that they can vote in the upcoming elections,” an election official said.
The electoral roll revision program enabled voters to new voters to register themselves, while existing voters had until August 20 to make changes and corrections and update their data in the electoral roll.
“Voter registration will continue until ten days before the last date of nomination after the announcement of the elections,” the officials added.
Voters have also been told that they must link their mobile numbers with their names in the electoral roll. “The challenge we are facing is to remove duplicate entries from the electoral roll. The numbers in the roll are inflated because voters who have moved to other constituencies or who have died have been entered twice,” said an election official.
Duplicate voter entries and voters with similar images are identified and eliminated using software.
Many voters reported that over 10,000 to 15,000 names were missing from the voters’ list in the Lok Sabha elections in the district.
Activist Rohan Desai of the National Society of Clean Cities has been reaching out to citizens and urging them to re-register if their names are missing from the list to ensure that they do not face any problems in the upcoming general elections.
