Watch for the Supermoon Blue Moon Monday

Published 13:15 Sunday, August 18, 2024

BROOKHAVEN — NASA reports that a blue supermoon will be visible starting Sunday, even though the full moon is technically on Monday, peaking at 1:26 p.m. The supermoon will appear full for three days, Sunday morning through Wednesday morning.

Supermoon means the moon is 90 percent closest to Earth. It will be the first of four supermoons, including supermoons in September and October.

The supermoon will also be a blue moon (no, not the blue one), meaning it will be the second full moon in a month.

According to the Farmers Almanac, the supermoon is called the Sturgeon Moon.

“The name Sturgeon Moon comes from the giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain; this native freshwater fish was easily caught during this time of summer and was an important staple food for Native Americans living in the region. Lake sturgeon were once quite common in late summer, but they are now rarer,” says the Farmers Almanac.

To see the Supermoon (Blue Moon), wait until moonrise at 7:59 p.m. and look east/southeast.
