Watch the new trailer for the documentary about garage rockers The Sonics

A documentary about the groundbreaking garage rock band The Sonics will finally hit theaters next month, more than five years after boom burst onto the film festival scene.

The core members of the Tacoma, Washington-based quintet, which was later credited by artists such as Kurt Cobain and LCD Soundsystem (who gave the Sonics pride of place on “Losing My Edge”), formed in the early ’60s and released two now-classic LPs before their first breakup in 1968.

But these two albums – the one from 1965 Here are the Sonics and 1966 boom — would form one of the foundations for the proto-punk movement led by bands such as the Stooges and MC5. The Sonics later influenced grunge acts from their native Pacific Northwest, including Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, all of whom would go on to boom.

After its debut at film festivals in 2018 Boom: A film about the Sonics Last year, Forge finally secured nationwide distribution and released the documentary in dozens of theaters starting September 13. Before the documentary’s full release Rolling Stone exclusively shares the new official trailer for the film:

boom also includes interviews with Nancy Wilson of Heart, Sub Pop producer Jack Endino, and all five core members of the Sonics: singer Jerry Roslie, saxophonist Rob Lind, brothers Larry and Andy Parypa (guitar and bass), and drummer Bobby Bennett.

“For me, the Sonics are more than just a band,” boomWriter and director Jordan Albertsen said in a statement: “They were my first obsession, they rocked harder and faster than anything I’d ever heard. And they were from the sixties! The music was dangerous. Sexy. It was fucking hard. This was punk rock before punk rock.”

boom will be premiered on September 7th in the band’s hometown of Seattle at the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), featuring the current lineup of the Sonics, which includes Lind. Check out the boom Website for further screening information.
