Water pipe burst on Hoosick Street causes significant disruption

A water pipe burst in Troy on Sunday caused a lane closure on Hoosick Street at the corner of 17th Street.

TROY, NY (WNYT) – A water main break in Troy on Sunday caused one lane on Hoosick Street to be closed at 5 p.m.th Street.

Crews worked throughout Sunday to repair the break.

Dunkin Donuts, Popeyes and Dominos on Hoosick Street were forced to close early on Sunday due to the break-in.

The burst water pipe also left about 16 households in the area without water, which frustrated neighbors.

“So, I wanted to turn on the shower, but then no water came out. Then our friend drove down the street and noticed that there was construction going on there,” some residents said.

Another resident said the water was turned off while he was taking a shower.

“We didn’t get back from training until around 12:00 and I was sweating like crazy when the water was turned off,” said a neighbor.

Russ Reeves is an engineer with the city of Troy and explained to NewsChannel 13 why he thinks the pipe burst.

“Today we had a 16-inch sewer line that broke in about four places, and at the same time we had a water main break. That section of pipe broke. The valve also broke,” Reeves said.

Reeves said he believed the break was due to the old infrastructure.

“This pipe is aged, it is corroded and fatigued from the stress of traffic and so on,” Reeves said.

Reeves also said that once the water is restored, everyone affected will be put on a boil water advisory for a few days, meaning they will have to boil the water before using it.

Mayor Mantello told NewsChannel 13 she expects crews to be here throughout the night to repair the breach.
