Wayfair is not a newcomer for me. I have bought all kinds of household goods from the online retailer, but it was mostly small things like Planters, Carpets And Mirror.

My long-term partner and I have had a beautiful handcrafted wood and iron bar cart in our home for the past 10 years. It’s heavy and difficult to move, and yet it’s been lugged from one house (and city) to the next. After having our first child nearly three years ago, we decided it was time to say goodbye to our beloved bar cart. We were tired of our toddler testing the durability of our expensive glassware, and her mountain of toys took over the bar cart’s undercarriage and became an eyesore.

If we were to replace the bar cart, it would have to be something special and there were certain must-have requirements. We have limited space so we needed something narrow. We wanted something open so the room would feel bigger and we could display a few bits and pieces while hiding our daughter’s toys but still keeping them accessible for the little ones. Cost was also a big consideration – we didn’t want to spend more than $500.

Bixby Bookshelf by Modway review

Overview: The Bixby is thoughtfully designed and very aesthetically pleasing – it fits perfectly with my modern, neutral decor with a touch of vintage. Simple, timeless and stylish, and it manages to hide my daughter’s toys in a way that delights her – having to open her very own ‘secret door’ to find her things seems to bring new joy to the same old toys she’s played with countless times. A winner!

Delivery: Extremely fast. I received it within a week of ordering. I believe the delivery time for this item is two weeks (if you are in Canada). Shipping was free and the bookcase arrived with all the necessary parts in a large box.

Assembly: This took about 75 minutes for one person. I usually assemble these pieces myself so I have a clear understanding of the physical work involved, but my partner took on this one as we wanted to build it quickly. Assembly was straightforward – the instructions provided were clear and all the holes aligned perfectly (which annoys me when they don’t).

Most popular features: The look – it has a neutral, modern, Scandinavian look and looks much more expensive than it is. It is multifunctional – a beautiful display of your precious items with the ability to store (or hide) toys, cleaning supplies or household items. It is sturdy and well constructed and the drawers have a soft close design which means no slamming doors. If you have children, I recommend buying one simple anti-tip belt (Also available at Amazon) for additional security.
