Welcome phase for students is extended with the new First 50 program – News

More than 100 events are planned for Campbell students during the first 50 days of the fall semester

For years, Welcome Week at Campbell University has served as an eventful introduction to college life for new students. A first impression before the rigors of academic work begin.

To help new and returning students stay engaged with the Campbell community beyond their first week, Campbell is introducing the First 50 initiative, which offers over 100 planned events during the first 50 days of the fall semester. First 50 begins with move-in day on August 16 and ends with an animal blessing event in Butler Chapel on October 4 before the mid-semester fall break.

In between, the First 50 will feature returning traditions such as the New Student Convocation and Medal Ceremony and Street Festival on August 20, as well as soon-to-be new traditions such as a “Dive In Movie” at the Aquatics Center on September 16.

“We have reached out to many of our campus partners – for example, athletic clubs, academic services, support services, the library, counseling services, financial aid and others – and asked if they would like to support this First 50 initiative and expand our slate of programs,” said Karen Parkes, director of student activities in the Office of Student Life.

Parkes said she hopes the First 50 program will improve first-year student retention rates and build a stronger student community in the process.

“This is a new time for them. They’re away from home for the first time. We’re trying to get them to do more than just stay in their room,” Parkes said. “They can see what Campbell has to offer and get more involved. They see that Campbell is more than learning and classes – which are obviously important – but we also want them to join clubs, participate in college tournaments and find their community.”
