play

Thousands were without power Friday night as the worst of Tropical Depression Debby continued to move through Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.

As of 8:30 p.m. Friday, more than 5,000 ConEd customers were affected by power outages, including more than 4,000 in Westchester. At the time of this report, the utility was “evaluating conditions” to provide an estimated restoration time.

NYSEG reported 27,891 outages across its service area, affecting 624 customers in Putnam County and 713 in Westchester. At the time of this report, there was no estimated time for service to be restored. Orange & Rockland reported only 54 customers without power in Rockland County, with no time for restoration as the utility was “evaluating” conditions.

Orange & Rockland, ConEd bring relief workers to the Hudson Valley

Utilities in the lower Hudson Valley were well prepared for what Friday’s weather might bring.

Before Tropical Depression Debby made landfall, hundreds of relief workers arrived in the Hudson Valley to assist ConEd. Teams were stationed at SUNY Purchase on Friday afternoon.

“This is a really challenging time of year for us,” said Deanne Ostrowski, director of strategic planning at ConEd, noting that heavy rains in the region over several days could result in downed trees. Ostrowski said crews are prepared and ready to troubleshoot service issues across the region.

Orange & Rockland began final storm preparations earlier this week and brought in 150 additional volunteers to assist with storm response, a news release said.

How to report power outages if you are a ConEd, NYSEG or O&R customer

The easiest way to report a power outage and find out about expected restoration times is to visit your electricity provider’s website.

If you are a ConEd customer, you can click here to report a power outage and you will be automatically enrolled in recovery updates sent to you via text message or phone call. You can also start the process by texting REG to 688-243.

NYSEG customers can do the same by going to this website and providing either a phone number or account number. Customers can also call 1-800-572-1131 to report outages. The utility reminds customers to stay away from downed power lines, “even lines that appear dead may be energized.”

“Also, stay away from flooded basements. If you suspect a natural gas leak, get up, get out and get out of there,” the NYSEG website says.

If you are an O&R customer, report your service outage here. Orange & Rockland recommends that if customers smell gas or suspect a gas leak, they call 9-1-1 rather than reporting it through the website.
