Where they stand in the preseason rankings for week one

The 2024 Tennessee Titans are one of the most mysterious teams in the NFL. Tennessee has undergone more changes this offseason than anyone in the NFL other than the Washington Commanders.

The Titans fired a successful head coach and hired a new head coach. Mike Vrabel’s time in Tennessee seemed to be coming to an end for some time. Not only had the Titans had two losing seasons in a row, but there were also some problems between Vrabel and the owners.

Enter Brian Callahan. Callahan comes to Tennessee with a reputation for developing quarterbacks, making him the perfect mentor for Will Levis. The Titans completely revamped the offense in the offseason, signing players like Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, Tyler Boyd, Lloyd Cushenberry and JC Latham.

Tennessee also made significant changes to its defense. Rookie defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat, playing alongside Pro Bowl DT Jeffery Simmons, could quickly become the best interior defensive duo in the NFL.

As the first week of the preseason begins, there are many unknowns surrounding the Titans and their new coaches and players. How good can Tennessee be in 2024?

Eric Edholm of NFL.com released his power rankings for the first week of the preseason and ranked the Titans 28th. While that sounds ominous, Edholm mentioned the unknowns surrounding the team and believes most of Tennessee’s changes are positive.

The Titans have gone through major changes on offense, defense, and the coaching staff, and I’m not sure what to make of all the upheaval. I’d say I’m mostly positive, but will the restructuring lead to more wins? A lot of course depends on Will Levis and his development this season, but you can’t say Tennessee doesn’t at least tried to back him up well on offense. How it all comes together under a new head coach like Brian Callahan is anyone’s guess. Given the sheer number of unknowns, there’s probably a wide range of possible outcomes this season. But I will say that anyone who says the AFC South is weak should take a step back and compare it to other divisions. There are four teams here that have a chance to finish above .500. It’s not as strong as the AFC North from top to bottom, but it might not be too far off either.

That means Edholm believes the Titans are one of the worst teams in the NFL — right now. He sees hope, but there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered, and those questions start and end with the quarterback position.
