Both the comic book and the Amazon TV adaptation of The boys are known for their brutality and relentless kill rate – which makes it somewhat surprising that the first character introduced in the series, Hughie Campbell was the only survivor at the end of the comic series.

The boys #72 – written by Garth Ennis, with art by Darick Robertson – ended the main series, Hughie remained alive. When the same creative team wrote the Dear Becky Follow-up miniseries a few years later, fans learned what became of the character in the decade that followed The boys.

Although Hughie was always portrayed as the most vulnerable member of the eponymous troupe, the series ultimately turned out to be a story of his development and self-realization as an unwavering hero.

As The boys The TV show is gearing up for its final season. Some fans are wondering if Hughie, one of the show’s most gentle characters, will survive. However, if the show follows the comics,he will be pretty much the only one who does that. The boys In both the comic and the television series, Hughie Campbell is used as a central character for the audience, as readers/viewers are introduced to the chaotic world of the franchise through his eyes. In the end, however, the character was more than that – he was the protagonist of The boys.

The boys contains a list of powerful, dangerous characters that Hughie seemed far from ready to face. Yet despite being a newcomer and almost certainly the weakest main character in the series, Hughie survived the end of The boys comic; in fact, he did more than that, he thrived. After the rest of the guys left, Hughie eventually took on the role of guardian of the world and made sure Vought never got out of control again.

In Dear Beckythe epilogue of the series, Hughie is portrayed as a confident, powerful character who is perhaps as close to a hero as The boys From the most reluctant member of the team to its only member, Hughies story arc is in some ways the only triumphant ending of the serieswhile the rest of the characters succumb to tragedy. What is particularly remarkable is that more than a decade after the conclusion of the main series, Hughie manages to keep Vought at bay, so that the events of The boys never repeats itself and he is able to lead a reasonably normal life.


Together with Starlight, Hughie comes as close to a “happy ending” as The boys ever get. In Dear BeckyHughie and Starlight are also shown to be living away from civilization, and the miniseries ends with them finally getting married. The two manage to live happily ever after, which is a better ending than any other in The boys Universe. While guys Fans unfamiliar with the comics might think that Butcher will be the last one standing because of his willpower, but Hughie is the last one standing.
