Will season 2 of RINGS OF POWER be more violent than season 1?

By Movieguide® Contributor

The second season of Amazon’s LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER has received higher ratings in some countries than previous episodes – but what does this mean for viewers?

“The upcoming season is officially rated 18+ in some countries around the world – including America’s northern neighbor Canada,” MSN reported, adding that the first season of RINGS OF POWER was rated 13+ in Canada.

This is the first time ever that a LORD OF THE RINGS project has received an age rating of 16+ in Canada.

In the USA, however, RINGS OF POWER retains the TV-14 rating of the first season for the second season.

The reason for this higher rating in some countries is unknown. Some suspect that there will be nudity or sexual content. However, The Direct has a different explanation.

“The most likely explanation is that Season 2 of THE RINGS OF POWER will not hold back when it comes to how Sauron tortures Celebrimbor,” they wrote. “Without going into specific spoilers from the source material as to why and how he is pushed to his limits, Celebrimbor is tortured by Sauron for two years.”

The Direct continued, “Many fans debated how far the show would go when this was inevitably brought to the screen in THE RINGS OF POWER, but the 18+ rating seems to be a pretty good indication that it will be brutal (like in the books).”

The outlet also pointed out that there are some big fight scenes planned for the second season, which may have also boosted ratings.

Not much is known about what will happen in RINGS OF POWER season 2, but Deadline reported that “Middle Earth is in the grip of the discord sown by Sauron and the deception and manipulation that led to the creation of more of the titular Rings of Power.”

“This season (also) includes the long-awaited Siege of Eregion, a pivotal battle in JRR Tolkien’s story of the Second Age of Middle-earth from which not everyone comes out alive,” the outlet added.

Movieguide® already reported on the third season of RINGS OF POWER:

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER is returning for a third season as showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne have renewed their contract with Amazon MGM Studios for three years.

Per Deadline“McKay and Payne wrote and executive produced the first season of the hit, Emmy-nominated Prime Video series THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER, which premiered in fall 2022. The series was the most-watched Amazon Original worldwide, debuting at No. 1 on the Nielsen streaming charts and remaining in the top 4 during its initial broadcast.”

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER, Episode 1.8: “Alloyed” won Best Adult Television at the 2023 Movieguide® Awards by Movieguide®.

During Season 2 wrapped The film is currently being shot and is scheduled to hit theaters later this year. Amazon executive Vernon Sanders expressed his excitement for what comes next.

“We started this remarkable journey with JD and Patrick more than five and a half years ago and have never looked back,” said Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios. “We continue to be amazed by the reach and scale of their vision and the tremendous global success that THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER has achieved in its record-breaking first season. We can’t wait for Prime Video customers to experience the epic adventure and thrilling drama that JD and Patrick continue to create in season two and beyond. Of course, the studio is delighted to extend our overall deal with these brilliant creative minds as they continue to pursue their passion for great storytelling.”
