Will the Blue Jays promote Joey Votto to face the Cincinnati Reds in Toronto?

Just four days before the start of the Cincinnati Reds’ three-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto, the biggest question for Reds fans is whether they will see Joey Votto face his former team in his hometown.

Votto was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts for the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, on Wednesday.

On August 2, Votto hit a pinch-hit single in the 9th inning to score the game-winning run that helped Buffalo defeat Worcester.

Since that hit, Votto has gone 3-for-26 with 15 strikeouts and five walks.

Earlier this month, Jays manager John Schneider said, “You sign (Votto) for a reason,” adding, “I think you’re making room for him.”

Votto joined Buffalo on July 19, but sprained his right ankle before the first game he was scheduled to play.

In early July, Votto hit his first home run while on rehab for Low-A Dunedin.

Votto posted a .294 batting average with 356 home runs in 17 seasons with Cincinnati and led the league in on-base percentage in seven of those seasons. He suffered an ankle injury in spring training after signing a minor league contract with the Jays in March.

Some on Twitter/X thought a graphic by @MLBONFOX of active players with at least 300 career home runs looked odd with Votto in the Jays’ blue jersey:
