With Google Drive, you can now save scanned documents as JPEGs in addition to PDFs

Summary

  • Google Drive now allows users to save scanned documents as JPEGs.
  • Scanned documents saved as JPEGs are generally smaller than PDFs and allow for faster uploads over mobile data.
  • This new feature is now rolling out to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts.

Google Drive users have long had the ability to scan physical documents and upload them to the cloud directly from the app. However, saving scanned documents has always been limited to PDFs.

The tool was previously updated to include automatic capture when the camera view is aligned with a document, an option to import from your camera roll, and a scanner keyboard shortcut for faster scanning, as well as options to change the orientation of the scanned document, auto-crop, filter, and more.

Get the most out of Google Drive

To make it easier to upload and share scanned documents with others, Google Drive is now introducing support for saving scanned documents as JPEGs. The tech giant announced the launch in a Workspace Updates post, stressing that the feature will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.

This new feature is rolling out now to users in both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains and will be available on both Android and iOS within the next fifteen days.

While it’s not a BIG change, JPEGs are typically smaller in size compared to PDFs, which should make uploading scanned documents to the cloud over mobile data or sharing them easier and faster. This may seem redundant at first, considering you can simply click on an image of the document in question and upload it to Google Drive as a JPEG, but the scanner gives you direct access to the additional tools mentioned above, such as automatic capture and cropping, as well as options to remove smudges and fingers that may have crept into the document and filters to improve text visibility.

As part of the Workspace Update post, Google also highlighted that its Meet video conferencing platform is now officially supported on Logitech’s Rally Bar Huddle. The device is typically used in small meeting rooms or small huddle spaces in offices.

Organization administrators using the plug-and-play video conferencing solution can now manage and monitor these devices through the Google Admin console.
