Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Wolverine: Deep Cut #2!wolverine has a number of powerful abilities that make him the iconic hero (and expert assassin) fans know today. However, one of those abilities has always been more of a hindrance than an advantage when it comes to attacks and maneuverability. At least until now, when Wolverine has finally mastered the one power he’s always had but never used to his advantage.

In Wolverine: Deep Cut #2 by Chris Claremont and Edgar Salazar, Wolverine infiltrates one of Mr. Sinister’s secret bases to destroy the cloning operation run by Nathaniel Essex. In the previous issue, Wolverine becomes aware of Sinister’s cloning plans after fighting and killing Sabretooth (who was actually a clone). So he decides to destroy the entire operation, but to do so, he must first take out Sinister’s personal strike team of killer mutants: the Marauders.

After Sabretooth’s death, the only Marauders left were Riptide, Arclight, Prism, Greycrow, Harpoon, Vertigo, Scrambler, and Blockbuster – each of them guarding Sinister’s clone base. While these mutants presented Wolverine with a unique challenge, Logan was certainly able to overcome it. And it was perhaps not his healing factor or his claws that played the biggest role in Wolverine’s eventual victory, but his previously underused “power” that he learned to use to his advantage: the weight of his adamantium skeleton.

The weight of Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton has always been a weakness – until now

Wolverine's exposed adamantium skeleton is surrounded by flames, his skin is burned.

Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton is not only the reason his claws are far more useful/deadly than they were as mere bones, but it also provided Wolverine with great protection in battle as his bones could not be broken, allowing his healing factor to work much faster after an injury. The downside, however, is that his skeleton made him incredibly heavy. Since the procedure, Wolverine is much slower in battle and any time he’s in water, he’s at a severe disadvantage. But now Wolverine has found a way to use that weight to his advantage.

While battling the Marauders, Wolverine uses the weight of his skeleton to block one of Blockbuster’s powerful punches with one hand, something the villain wasn’t expecting just by looking at it. The extra weight Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton gave him also prevented him from being thrown around by Riptide, giving Wolverine the chance to deliver a fatal blow when the villain was surprised by the ineffectiveness of his powers.

The fact that Wolverine uses his weakness as a weapon does not save him from a possible fate

Wolverine underwater, drowning.

Wolverine may have mastered the art of using the extra weight of his adamantium skeleton to his advantage during a fight, but unfortunately that still doesn’t save him from a potential fate: drowning. Drowning is one of the few ways to actually kill Wolverine, as his healing factor can’t compensate for his lack of oxygen. And with the extra weight of the adamantium in his body, Wolverine is at a higher risk of drowning every time he’s in water, and no amount of training can compensate for this weakness.

Despite the ongoing danger of drowning, which is made even more dangerous by his adamantium skeleton, wolverine proves that he has this “power” completely under control when he defeats the Marauders. And it was about time, because he always had it, but never found a way to use it to his advantage – until now.

He has been played by Hugh Jackman in the Fox and Marvel film franchises.
