Marvel Comics’ wolverine has been called many things in his long, long life – but now an old friend has added a new nickname to his repertoire that should have always been his code name. From Weapon X to Patch to “the best there is” Logan has heard many names in its fifty-year history, but its new “Sound” is perhaps the most fitting nickname.
Uncanny X-Men #1 – written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez – sees Wolverine visiting an old friend from his time in the Army. On his deathbed, the elderly Miguel greets Logan with the words: “Ah. Blades. I knew you would come. Please sit down.”
The pair have a haunting exchange about the afterlife, but it is the nickname “Blades” that Wolverine gets from his old friend that stands out. Because these days, Logan’s status quo doesn’t resemble that of Wolverine.

The name Blades could apply to Logan in almost any era after his experience with the Adamantium bond.
Originally, Logan’s nickname Wolverine was meant to be quite literal. He was originally intended to be a mutated wolverine, but that idea obviously never came to fruition. Likewise, Logan’s famous origins – as well as some of his most famous iconography – show that the fan-favorite X-Men icon lives with wolf packs, not the wolverines he gets his name from. And while he still shares some traits with his namesake, including his wild, hairy nature, Logan is rarely drawn particularly small these days – his small stature was once his greatest connection to his animal counterparts.
On the other hand, the name Blades could apply to Logan in almost any era after his Adamantium bonding experience. Obviously, it is a name he is already known by, and considering how His first instinct is usually to look at the six massive, unbreakable blades in his forearms. It is probably more appropriate these days as “Wolverine.” Sure, it might cause some brand confusion with Marvel Comics’ outstanding daywalker Blade, but it’s not like the two cold-blooded killers cross paths all that often.
Wolverine is undoubtedly one of Marvel Comics’ most famous heroes, but his name doesn’t make much sense these days.

No longer the small, violent berserker he once was, Logan is now usually depicted as a violent berserker of only slightly below average size. The likelihood of the character changing his superhero codename this late in the game is practically nil, but If Logan ever decides to wolverine Names he is quite capable of calling himself Blades.
