Woman (74) receives suspended sentence for biting her daughter

A 74-year-old woman who bit her daughter during an argument has been sentenced to six months’ probation for grievous bodily harm.

A temporary restraining order was also obtained against Susan Lamy, prohibiting her from having any contact with her daughter for the next two years.

The district court learned that the dispute took place on May 31.

Prosecutor Katie Ridley said Lamy became verbally abusive and when the daughter asked her to leave the house, she knocked over a kitchen chair and started waving her arms around.

When the daughter tried to hold her back, she bit her left hand.

Police arrived and arrested Lamy, said attorney Ridley, adding: “When questioned, she said her daughter tried to push her down the stairs and that’s why she bit her.”

“She said she knocked over the chair because she was angry.”

The court heard that Lamy had been convicted previously, but that was 30 years ago, and defence lawyer Estelle Burns pointed out that this was “not a case like this”.

She said: “It was totally out of character for her. It will never happen again.”

She added that Lamy hopes to reconcile with her daughter in the future.

Assistant Judge David Cadin said Lamy posed a “medium risk of re-offending.”

He concluded: “In these circumstances, it is appropriate to grant an interim injunction.”
