Woman criticizes online concept that shapes shopping habits worldwide: “It’s a never-ending cycle”

The effects of global warming and extreme weather events can quickly overwhelm you – so much so that you feel like there is nothing you can do as an individual.

But as TikToker DepressionDotGov (@depressiondotgov) shared in a viral video, individual consumption does play a role.

@depressiondotgov Here is my opinion on individual consumption – it is important. #socialmedia #overconsumption #disinfluence #mentalhealth #financialliteracy #medialiteracy #garbage #climatechange #environment #fastfashion ♬ Original sound – DepressionDotGov

In her video, DepressionDotGov explains what she has learned over the years about overconsumption, including its financial, mental health, and environmental impacts.

She points out the widespread misconception that individual purchases do not really matter compared to the purchases of large corporations.

Another point made by DepressionDotGov is that individual consumption is associated with personal fulfillment and happiness, but this feeling is fleeting and always leaves us wanting more.

“The idea that they could play a role in the bigger picture makes people angry. And we don’t want to give up our wants and needs and risk becoming unhappy in our very short lives,” she says.

She concludes by saying that her platform is best used to discuss how social media influences consumer behavior, for example, understanding how advertisers target you online. DepressionDotGov’s message is important because it encourages people to rethink their purchasing habits and consider the impact of those purchases.

Overconsumption is a problem because it contributes to global waste and creates harmful pollution when that waste ends up in landfills. This pollution contributes to the overheating of our planet. At the same time, the production of new goods often exploits natural resources and uses harmful chemicals.

You can reduce and control your overconsumption and save money by changing your shopping habits – for example, by making a list in advance – and preparing meals. Another idea is to look at thrift stores for fashionable secondhand clothes and useful household items instead of buying everything new.

“Your account single-handedly helped change my mindset,” commented one TikTok user.

Another TikToker wrote: “Overconsumption causes companies to continue to mass produce everything. It’s a never-ending cycle.”

“I’ve been shopping more consciously lately,” another TikToker shared. “I only buy things that I need immediately and can use long-term.”
