Woman plans sweet painting date, but her husband has no idea there’s a “twist”

An expectant mother has melted hearts online when she turned a painting evening with her husband into a surprise pregnancy reveal.

Christina Kelley, 32, always knew she wanted to share the exciting pregnancy news with her husband Ryan, 39, in an unexpected way. When the time finally came in April, she had seen other couples hosting a painting night on social media, so she decided to copy the trend, but with a sweet “pregnancy twist” at the end.

Kelley of Burlington, Connecticut, said Newsweek that they’d been wanting to “try it out” for a while, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to surprise her. The couple sat down to paint portraits of each other two days after she found out she was pregnant, and instead of painting her husband’s face, she wrote “Baby Kelley, est. 2025” on her canvas.

Kelley continued, “While I was at work, I decided to stop by the store and pick up supplies so we could have an impromptu evening together. We set up around 6 p.m. and I was done within five minutes, but Ryan took the job very seriously as he wanted to do a good job.

“It took him almost four hours to finish his painting. I had to invent little details along the way to make it look like I was painting too. That’s why there are lots of little dots and other details on the painting.”

When her husband finally completed his masterpiece, Kelley asked him to show her the portrait he had done of her. She said she was “really surprised” at how well he had done it, but of course it was nothing compared to her artwork.

“At first he thought I was playing a prank on him and wrote something like ‘got you,’ but when he realized what the words meant, he was so shocked and excited,” Kelley said Newsweek.

“It took him a minute to process that, and I handed him the memory box with the two tests I had done to show him. When he saw the tests, he stood up and gave me a big hug.”

The couple will definitely keep the artwork as a keepsake, even though they have since learned that their little boy is due to be born on December 30, 2024, and not in early 2025 as originally planned.

When the baby news finally came out and the parents-to-be felt ready to share it with the world, Kelley posted shots of her portrait on TikTok (@chrissy_vibes). The pregnancy reveal has melted many hearts online, garnering nearly 2 million views and over 201,000 likes so far.

Kelley was overwhelmed by the response, as she never expected it to attract so much attention.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post it because it was an intimate moment, but Ryan said it would be sweet to show our kid later when it’s all put together.

“I posted it on TikTok after 12 weeks when I told our closest friends and family. Everyone’s response was so wonderful and supportive,” Kelley added.

With over 550 comments on the viral TikTok post, many social media users praised her adorable way of announcing the big news. One comment reads: “In tears!! You guys are so cute.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “I have goosebumps and SOBs.”

“This is the cutest thing,” added a third.

Not to mention, there was also a lot of praise for the portrait of her husband that he spent so long working on. Another comment reads, “So sweet, AND he did a really great job on your portrait! Congratulations!”
