Woolworths announces major changes to its shopping carts – but customers are angry: “We deserve a discount”

Woolworths has faced heavy criticism from customers for introducing a new way of shopping in stores with a digital shopping cart.

The supermarket giant has launched a trial of the Scan&Go trolley in Sydney, which allows customers to scan their items while shopping using a tablet device.

Before shopping, customers can unlock a tablet by scanning their Everyday Rewards card and placing it on a shopping cart.

Groceries can be conveniently tracked and paid for in one transaction without having to remove items.

The new offering is being trialled at Woolworths Windsor in Sydney’s north-west, with plans to roll it out to Warringah Mall, The Ponds, Kellyville North, Lane Cove, Kellyville, Oran Park, Kellyville Grove, Schofields Town Centre and North Parramatta.

But shoppers on TikTok were outraged, claiming the new feature made them feel like Woolworths employees.

“So do we get a discount because we do all the work for Woolies?” wrote one.

“I’m adding ‘Woolies employee’ to my resume,” said another.

A third added: “So do I work at Woolworths now?”

“Woolworths is turning us into iPad kids,” joked someone else.

Another said he just wanted “cheaper groceries” and not another option in the store.

“Our customers expect us to provide them with both value and convenience,” said Faye IIhan of the Woolworths Group in a statement.

“Scan&Go Trolley is a market-leading innovation that helps you save time and balance your budget when shopping at the supermarket.”

“Depending on our customers’ feedback, we hope to introduce the Scan&Go trolley to more supermarkets across the country.”

The latest technology is an extension of the mobile Scan&Go feature, which is offered in selected locations. The mobile Scan&Go feature is available in 74 supermarkets.

How does the Woolworths Scan&Go Trolley test work?

1. Unlock device: Scan your Everyday Rewards card to unlock a device and add it to your cart.

2. Scan your items: Scan your items with the integrated scanner and pack your groceries on the go.

3. Pay and drive: If you wish to proceed to the checkout, go to the self-service checkout to pay for your purchase
