XB-1 supersonic demonstrator completes second test flight

Boom Supersonic completed second flight of his XB-1 Demonstration aircraft on Monday, May 26th.

The three-engine fighter jet took off from Mojave Air & Space in California and stayed airborne for just 15 minutes, reaching an altitude of 10,400 feet and a speed of 232 knots (277 miles per hour).

For the first time, the XB-1 extended and retracted its landing gear, testing the aircraft’s handling and the use of the digital stability enhancement system.

The second flight of the XB-1 takes place five months after its maiden flight on 22 MarchThe demonstration aircraft was built by Boom to test concepts and collect data for the development of Overture, an 80-seat supersonic passenger aircraft expected to reach Mach 1.7.

According to Boom, the XB-1’s first supersonic flight is likely to occur after about ten launches, as the flight envelope will then be expanded.

From now on, the demonstrator will fly more frequently. The milestone to be achieved by the end of the year is to break the sound barrier.
