Yankees get substitute bench from the Blue Jays

The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Cam Eden from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash. Eden made his debut with Toronto last season.

Yankees sign outfielder Cam Eden from the Blue Jays

Eden played in five games for the Blue Jays last season, scoring one run and one hit. A native of Yuba City, California, the 26-year-old was drafted by the Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. Eden posted a .198/.299/.322 batting average with seven home runs, 35 RBI and 26 stolen bases in Triple-A this season. He has stolen 153 bases in five minor league seasons. The Yankees have done their homework and acquired more relievers and a pinch runner they could use in the postseason. Eden will be a perfect fit for the Bronx Bombers. But Eden is not on the 40-man roster yet.

Ironically, Eden made his debut against the Yankees. Unfortunately, he struggled both offensively and defensively in the minors. Hopefully the Yankees can help him find his game. Eden has also played the designated hitter position and has been primarily an outfielder in left field. Despite some struggles, his speed and stolen base history have been quite impressive. In fact, Eden has more stolen bases than any other Triple-A player. He has stolen 79 bases in 222 games, so it’s easy to see how attractive he is to the Yankees. Eden is comparable to a 2019 Terrance Gore.

Although the MLB trade deadline has passed, players who were not on a 40-man roster can still be traded. Blue Jays fans were excited to see Eden play with Jonatan Clase in the Buffalo Bisons outfield, but this trade gives him a chance to play at the major league level. Eden could be used as a relief runner at a key moment in a Yankees game in the postseason.
