The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa, translated by Louise Heal Kawai
The cat who saved books also checks off task #20: Read a book about books (fiction or non-fiction)! Translated from Japanese, this novel is about a teenager who inherits a used bookstore from his grandfather. He plans to close it, but then a talking cat appears and insists that he help him rescue unwanted books from around town. What book lover could resist such a premise?
Of Cattle and Men by Ana Paula Maia, translated by Zoë Perry
From Cat to Cattle: This novella is a dark story that packs a lot into 99 pages. Written by a Brazilian author and translated from Portuguese, it is about Edgar Wilson, a stunning technician at a slaughterhouse. His job has recently become more difficult, however, because the cattle are panicking and running into walls and cliffs. The foreman believes that a jaguar is lurking in the nearby jungle and this has frightened them, but Edgar knows that something more sinister is happening and that it is not just the cattle that are affected.
